Falcons Return Home to Face UNLV and Bakersfield This Weekend
The Air Force men’s soccer team returns home after two weekends on the road for a pair of Western Athletic Conference games this weekend at the Academy. The Falcons, tied for second place in the WAC’s East Division, will host UNLV on Friday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m., and CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. Air Force’s four seniors, Mitch Kim, Michael Thrasher, Brian Klazura and Caleb Downey, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony on Sunday.
The Falcons enter the weekend with a 1-9-4 overall record and a 1-1-4 mark in league play after a couple of 1-1 ties at Seattle University and San Jose State last weekend. UNLV enters the weekend at 6-9 overall and 4-3 in the WAC, while Bakersfield is 6-7-2 and 4-2-1.
Falcons Go 0-0-2 Last Weekend
Air Force played a pair of 1-1 draws last weekend and freshman Blake Elder scored both goals for the Falcons, the first two of his career. On Friday, he scored his first career goal (unassisted) in the 75th minute to even the game at 1-all against league-leader Seattle. Then on Sunday, he scored another unassisted goal, this time with 24 seconds remaining in regulation, to tie the game against San Jose State. It was AFA’s only shot on goal for the game.
Freshman goalie Jake Schenk played all 220 minutes and made 14 saves in the two games. He had six saves on Friday at Seattle, then had eight against San Jose State on Sunday.
Elder Named Player of the Week
With his two goals last weekend, Elder was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week. He is the second Falcon to win the award this season, joining junior Zachary Modly. For the week, Elder attempted four shots and is currently tied for second on the team in scoring with six points.
WAC Tourney Coming to the Academy
The Falcons will host the 2013 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament beginning Thursday, Nov. 14. Three games will be played on the 14th, with the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 15 and the championship game at noon on Sunday, Nov. 17. For more information visit www.wacsports.com.
Falcons Picked Second in WAC Preseason Rankings
The Falcons were picked to finish second in the WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Bakersfield was predicted to win the conference by the eight league coaches. Air Force senior Caleb Downey was selected as the preseason Defensive Player of the Year and fellow senior Brian Klazura joined Downey on the preseason all-WAC team.
Back to the WAC
After spending the last 14 years playing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the Falcons will begin play, once again, in the Western Athletic Conference in 2013. Air Force was a member of the WAC from 1996-98 before breaking off with seven other schools to form the Mountain West Conference. The MWC did not offer men’s soccer, however, so the Falcons moved to the MPSF.
