Junior defender Caleb Downey was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week last weekend. Downey earned a spot on the team by scoring the only goal of the game 3:41 into overtime to lead Air Force to a stunning 1-0 upset over 5th-ranked New Mexico last Friday in Albuquerque.
Downey collected a throw-in from teammate Trevor Wade in the box and beat UNM keeper Victor Rodriguez for his first goal of the season. The win was AFA's first over a top-5 ranked team since beating No. 1 Creighton 2-1 in the 1993 NCAA Tournament.
Downey, who played all 93:41 of the game, was also instrumental in blanking the MPSF's top-scoring team and player, Devon Sandoval. Downey and his back-line teammates held the Lobos to just four shots on goal while Sandoval attempted just two total shots and did not attempt a shot on goal.
The Falcons host New Mexico this Friday, Oct. 12 at Cadet Soccer Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.
