No. 19 Air Force Falls To Portland, 9-2, at Nike Husky Soccer Classic

The Air Force soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Friday at the Nike Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., falling to the University of Portland, 9-2.
The Falcons, 5-1 and ranked No. 19 in the latest NSCAA/Adidas Top 25 poll, struggled from the beginning, allowing four goals in the first half. Portland's Kelly Gray scored two of the four goals, while Nate Jacqua assisted on three of them.
The second half did not start any better, as Jacqua notched a goal just 58 seconds into the stanza. Air Force finally got on the board when junior Tom Clark scored his first goal of the season in the 52nd minute.
Portland struck back seven minutes later as Josh Simpson scored his second goal of the game to make the score 6-1. Junior Paul Gagliardi scored his team-high third goal of the season in the 63rd minute off an assist from Clark for the Falcons' final goal. Portland added three goals in a span of 1:26 to close the scoring.
Portland attempted 26 total shots, with 15 on goal. Air Force had just 12 total shots and just six on goal. Senior goalie Mike Brophy allowed five of the Pilots' goals before being replaced by junior Mike Taylor, who gave up four goals and made four saves. Justin Carter had four saves for Portland, now 4-3 this season.
Air Force continues play at the Nike Husky Classic on Sunday, Sept. 30 against Host Washington, which is ranked No. 7 in the country.
