Falcons, Aggies Battle to 1-1 Tie
USAFA, Colo. -
A pair of first-half goals held up for the rest of the game Friday at Cadet Soccer Stadium as the Air Force men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie with UC-Davis. Ian Conklin scored for the Aggies and sophomore Casey Leung notched his first career goal for Air Force. With the draw, Air Force is 2-2-1 this season, while UC-Davis remains undefeated at 3-0-2. Conklin opened the scoring in the 16th minute after taking a pass from Nicholas Lind, avoiding a Falcon defender and sliding a 16-yard shot by Falcon goalie Brian Guyette. Conklin led the Aggies with two shots on goal. It was Conklin's first tally of the season. Leung evened the game in the 22nd minute with a header off a corner kick from senior Colin Eames. Leung placed the ball by the outstretched arms of Aggie goalie Charles Warne. The game was very physical as there were a total of 49 fouls and five yellow cards. Shots were at a premium during the entire 110 minutes. UC-Davis had six shots on goal, while Air Force could muster only four. Three of AFA's shots were by Eames, and one almost ended the game early in the second overtime as he found an opening in the middle of the UC-Davis defense and fired a shot that Warne got his hands on but could not corral. The ball slowly rolled toward the goal line but was cleared by an Aggie defender just before crossing the line. Air Force had 17 total shots, compared to 13 for the Aggies, who had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Guyette made five saves for the Falcons, while Warne had three for UC-Davis. Air Force travels to Denver to play the University of Washington on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. The game will be played at the University of Denver campus.
