Sagastume Scores Twice as Air Force Defeats UIC, 2-1
Air Force senior Marcus Sagastume scored both of his team's goals Sunday as the Falcon men's soccer team defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago, 2-1, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Air Force improves to 1-0-1, while the Flames fall to 0-2.
Sagastume put the Falcons ahead 1-0 after taking header passes from David Schill and Josh Sanders and heading the ball himself over the outstretched arms of UIC freshman goalie Jeff Engelbrecht in the seventh minute. Sagastume gave Air Force a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute by converting a penalty kick.
With his two goals today, Sagastume moves into a tie with Dave Walick (1989-92) for 11th place on the school's career points list with 72. He has 23 career goals and 26 career assists.
UIC cut the lead in half in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick of its own, converted by Tonci Skroce. Air Force survived a late rally by the Flames, which included a shot by Pawel Ligas in the final minute that eluded Falcon goalie Paul Elsbernd but floated just wide of the net.
Elsbernd, a sophomore playing in just his second career game, posted his first victory as a Falcon by making two saves. Engelbrecht made eight saves for UIC. Sagastume and Sanders each had a game-high five total shots, with four of Sagastume's were on goal.
