Jamiesh Holait scored the lone goal of the game in the 62nd minute to lead the Grand Canyon men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory Friday night in Phoenix. With the victory, GCU improved to 3-13-1 overall and 2-8 in the Western Athletic Conference, while the Falcons had their six-game unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 3-10-5 overall and 3-2-5 in league play following their regular-season finale.
Holait took a corner kick from William O'Dwyer and placed a header past Air Force keeper Jake Schenk. GCU and Air Force were equal with 12 shots apiece throughout the contest, although the Falcons put five of those on target compared to four for the 'Lopes.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes, with the 'Lopes holding the slight advantage in shots, 7-6. The Falcons put three attempts on target, but GCU goalkeeper Felipe Reyes stopped each of them.
Following the GCU goal, the Falcons pressured the 'Lopes defense, taking four shots before time expired. Reyes finished with a career-best five saves en route to also recording his first career shutout. Alberto Sanchez Garcia paced the 'Lopes offense with four shot attempts, while Air Force freshman Cameron Duley attempted a team-high three shots.
The Falcons will host the 2013 WAC Championships beginning next week at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Air Force will enter the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed and play at noon on Thursday, Nov. 14.
