Mark Fetrow scored a first half goal and Corey Hertzog added a second half tally to lead the 23rd-ranked Penn State men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Air Force Friday night at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, the Nittany Lions improved to 4-1, while the Falcons fell to 1-4.
Fetrow put Penn State on the board in the 23rd minute with his first goal of the season. Matheus Braga started the play with a free kick into the box that bounced around a couple Air Force players and PSU's Jordan Tyler before Fetrow headed the ball over the outstretched arms of Air Force goalie Matt Underwood.
The Falcons struggled to get anything going offensively in the first stanza, unable to register a shot on goal against the Nittany Lion defense. Air Force's back line was just as solid, allowing just one other shot on goal to Penn State in the first 45 minutes.
Hertzog gave Penn State an insurance goal in the 59th minute after gathering a pass from Braga over the Falcon defense and chipping the ball from about 15 yards over Underwood. It was Hertzog's sixth goal of the season.
Penn State finished the game with a 15-11 advantage in total shots and 6-3 in shots on goal. Sophomore Kevin Durr led the Falcons with four total shots. Underwood made four saves for AFA, while Gross posted his third shutout of the season by making three saves.
Air Force returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 19 against Oral Roberts at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
