Khiry Shelton scored twice and Matt Bersano made five saves to lead the Oregon State men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Air Force Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis, Ore. The victory lifted the Beavers to 5-1 on the season, while the Falcons fell to 0-5.
The Beavers opened up the scoring in the 13th minute. Bjorn Sandberg passed the ball to Shelton on the left side of the goal. Shelton made a move past an Air Force defender and fired a shot from the top of the box that flew into the right side of the net past Falcon keeper Jake Schenk.
Shelton opened the second half with his second goal of the afternoon. Sandberg played a pass through the midfield that opened up the defense. Shelton fired a shot from the left side of the penalty area that beat Schenk near side for an insurance goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers outshot the Falcons 15-12 during the game, which was televised nationally by the Pac-12 Network. OSU also held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal, led by Shelton with four total shots and three on goal. Junior Zachary Modly led the Falcons with three total shots and two on net. Schenk finished the game with a career-high seven saves.
Air Force returns home for a pair of games next weekend at Cadet Soccer Stadium, beginning on Friday, Sept. 20 against San Diego State at 7 p.m.
