Jamel Wallace and Matt McManus each scored a second-half goal to lead the San Diego State men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Air Force Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver. With the victory, SDSU improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Falcons fell to 0-5.
Following a scoreless first half, Wallace placed a header past Falcon goalie Jim Gullo in the 78th minute. Evan Toft sent a free kick into the box that found Nick Cardenas, who headed a pass to Wallace. With the Falcons pushing up in the final minutes, McManus increased the lead to 2-0 in the 88th minute by firing a shot past Gullo after receiving a crossing pass from Michael Rocha.
San Diego State enjoyed a 22-14 lead in total shots and an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Steven Noller led the Falcons with four total shots. Morgan Maestas made five saves for SDSU in posting his first victory of the season. Gullo made six saves for Air Force, which has not scored since the first game of the season, a span of 388 minutes.
The Falcons play both of their service-academy rivals next weekend as part of the Birmingham Southern Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. Air Force battles Navy on Friday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. (CT), then plays Army on Sunday, Sept. 21.
