Falcons Drop Season Opener, 1-0, to Houston Baptist in Double OT
Sept. 3, 2010
Box Score and Play-by-Play in PDF Format Tanner Fyfe blasted a shot from 30 yards out with 2:50 remaining in the second overtime period Friday night to lead the Houston Baptist men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Air Force at Cadet Soccer Stadium in the season opener for each team. Fyfe took a back pass from Mateo Jimenez and fired a shot that found the top shelf just over the outstretched arms of Air Force goalie Matt Underwood. It was Fyfe's second shot on goal of the game and just the fifth for the Huskies. Air Force also posted five shots on goal and outshot HBU 19-12 in total shots. Each team had a golden opportunity to score early in the game. Air Force sophomore Kevin Durr placed a shot past HBU goalie Chris Dodd in the 9th minute that hit the right post and rolled along the goal-line before Dodd corralled the ball. Durr posted a game-high five total shots, while sophomore Zane Dydasco and junior John Melcher each had four for Air Force. Then in the 10th minute, Underwood made a diving save to barely get a hand on a shot by the Huskies' John McDuffee to keep the game scoreless. Underwood made three of his four saves in the first half in his first collegiate start, while Dodd made five saves in posting the shutout. The Falcons owned a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks and each side was assessed two yellow cards. Air Force returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 5 against cal Poly at Cadet Soccer Stadium, beginning at 1 p.m.
