Senior goalie Matt Underwood made two saves in posting his first shutout of the season and eighth of his career. He made one save in each half and did not see a shot on goal in either overtime session. His teammates, meanwhile, had five shots on goal, four of them in the second half when Air Force had some golden opportunities to put the ball in the net.
Senior Patrick Compton found himself alone in front of the net off a free kick from senior Kevin Durr but placed his shot just high of the net with 32 minutes left. Durr then had an open shot from 20 yards out with two minutes remaining in the second half that UCD goalie Omar Zeenni saved. Durr, who had a game-high six shots, also had a great look in the first overtime period but fired a 25-yard blast that just sailed over the net.
"Our defense was really good for 90 minutes," said Air Force head coach Doug Hill. "We shut down most of their offensive attacks, but we are just one step off on offense. We needed to win the winable games, so that makes our game Sunday even more important. We are creating good chances and our fitness level was high for the entire game."
Air Force outshot UC Davis 17-10 and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Zeenni made five saves for the Aggies and has yet to allow a goal in three games this season. Matt Weisenfarth had both shots on goal for UC Davis.
Air Force hosts Drexel University on Sunday, Sept. 2 at Cadet Soccer Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
