CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Air Force freshman Kyle O'Brien has been named the ECAC Lacrosse League Co-Rookie of the Week, as released by the league on Monday. It marks the first career award for O'Brien and the second conference weekly award for an Air Force player this season.
An defenseman from Denver, Colo., O'Brien picked up a team-high six ground balls and registered a team-leading two caused turnovers in the Falcons' 9-8 overtime victory over service-academy rival Army in Houston on Saturday. With Air Force trailing 8-7, O'Brien's biggest takeaway came in the final 1:15 of regulation, as he stripped the ball from the Black Knights' leading scorer, giving Air Force another possession and a chance to send the game into overtime.
Sharing rookie of the week honors with O'Brien was Denver's Wes Berg, while Loyola's Mike Sawyer and Jack Runkel were named offensive player and defensive player of the week, respectively, and Fairfield's Michael Roe was tabbed the specialist of the week.
The Falcons open their 2012 ECAC slate this weekend, March 17, when they visit fifth-ranked Loyola in a 12:00 p.m. (ET) contest.
