Erik Smith Named ECAC Co-Rookie of the Week
March 7, 2011
CAPE COD, Mass. - Air Force freshman Erik Smith has been named the ECAC Lacrosse League Co-Rookie of the Week, as released by the league on Monday. It marks the first career award for Smith, and the first conference weekly award for an Air Force player since joining the league last season. A midfielder from Golden, Colo., Smith was named to the Pioneer Face-Off Classic all-tournament team after registering six points on two goals and four assists to go along with 14 ground balls during the Falcons' 1-1 weekend. On Saturday, he scored five points in a 16-10 win over Manhattan, helping Air Force snap its 12-game losing streak. Smith was also successful at the face-off X in the Falcons' two games this weekend, winning 19-of-30 draws, including 13-of-17 (.765) against the Jaspers. His nine ground balls versus Manhattan were the most for an Air Force player this season. Also honored by the ECAC Lacrosse League this week were Denver's Alex Demopoulos and Jamie Faus, as offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, while Smith shared the honor with Shawn Kaplan of Ohio State. The Falcons begin their 2011 ECAC slate this Friday, March 11, when they visit Fairfield.
