Air Force Falls to Hobart in Season Finale
April 28, 2012
GENEVA, N.Y. - Unable to overcome a five-goal halftime deficit, the Air Force lacrosse team dropped a 12-8 contest to ECAC foe Hobart Saturday evening at Boswell Field.
Hobart (4-9, 2-4 ECAC) started out the game hot, tallying a pair of scores in the opening minute to take a 2-0 lead. While the Falcons were able to tie the score with the next two goals, including a man-down goal by freshman Keith Dreyer (Malvern, Pa.) at the 12:45 mark in the first period, the Statesmen scored the last two goals of the period to regain their advantage.
Air Force's deficit grew to 5-3 after Hobart opened the second quarter with a score, while sophomore Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) tallied his first goal of the game midway through the period to bring the Falcons back within one, before the Statesmen closed out the opening half with a 3-0 run, including a pair of man-up goals, to take an 8-3 advantage into the intermission.
In the second half, Air Force (6-7, 1-5 ECAC) trailed by as many as six goals on two occasions, but put together a streak of their own in the fourth quarter, tallying three straight scores, including a pair of man-up goals. However, it was too little, too late, as the Statesmen held on for the four-goal victory.
Crampton registered a hat trick, his sixth of the season, to lead the Falcons' offense, while Dreyer added a goal and two assists. In addition, Kyle Cassady (So., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Adam Paranka (Sr., Denver, Colo.) each notched a goal and an assist, while freshman long-stick midfielder Kyle O'Brien (Denver, Colo.) dished out an assist to register his ninth point of the season.
Air Force outshot Hobart for the game, 40-30, but the Statesmen used strong play from goalkeeper Peter Zonino, who posted 16 saves, including 13 in the second half, to hold off the Falcons. There were a combined 15 penalties in the game, with the Falcons going 2-of-6 on the EMO, while the Statesmen were 2-of-7 on extra-man opportunities.
In addition, sophomore Bryan Price (Denver, Colo.) turned in a strong performance at the face-off X, winning 11-of-21 draws against the second-ranked face-off midfielder in the nation.
