Falcons Drop 10-7 Contest to Jacksonville
March 6, 2011
Senior captain Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.) scored a season-high four points, but the Air Force lacrosse team fell to Jacksonville, 10-7, Sunday at the Pioneer Face-Off Classic, hosted by the University of Denver.
Jacksonville (2-2) scored the first two goals of the game before Air Force (1-3) got a pair of goals from Sandtorv and Mike Crampton (Fr., Kinnelon, N.J.), respectively before the end of the first period. The Dolphins regained the advantage, scoring the only goal of the second quarter, to take a 3-2 lead at the half.
Senior Zack Carroll (Freehold Township, N.J.) broke the Falcons’ scoring drought just over three minutes into the third period, but Jacksonville rattled off four unanswered goals in the period to go up 7-3.
Sandtorv opened the final period with his fourth man-up goal of the year, but the Dolphins scored three of the next four goals to grab a 10-5 advantage with 3:26 remaining. Air Force notched two more goals in the final minutes of the contest, including an unassisted score from junior defenseman Dayton Gilbreath (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), but it was not enough to overcome their deficit.
At the end of the weekend, the Pioneer Face-Off Classic all-tournament team was announced, including a pair of Falcons. Freshman Tommy McKee (Holt, Mich.) earned a spot on the all-tourney team after scoring six goals in Air Force’s 16-10 win over Manhattan on Saturday, while Erik Smith (Fr., Golden, Colo.) was also honored, with two goals, four assists, 14 groundballs and a .633 face-off win percentage for the weekend.
The Falcons return to action next Friday, March 11, when they travel to Fairfield for their first ECAC contest of the season.
