LEXINGTON, Va. - Despite turning in its best defensive performance of the season, the Air Force lacrosse team fell to host VMI, 6-4, Sunday afternoon.
The Falcons were first to get on the board, getting a score from senior captain Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.) less than two minutes into the contest on a feed from Keith Dreyer (Jr., Malvern, Pa.). However, VMI responded its own goal at the 11:12 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
The Keydets (1-4) took the lead with a man-up goal midway through the opening period, while increasing their advantage to two goals with another man-up score with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Smith added his second goal of the game, assisted by Kyle Cassady (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio), with 1:31 on the clock, as the Falcons went into the second period trailing 3-1.
The first two goals of the second quarter came from VMI, as the Keydets pushed their lead to 5-2 with four minutes left in the half. A tally from Christopher Allen (So., Hillsborough, N.J.), assisted by Dreyer, was the last of the period, to cut the margin to 5-3 at the half.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the third quarter, and the scoreless drought for both teams continued until the 6:22 mark in the final stanza, when Tommy McKee (Sr., Holt, Mich.) found the back of the net to get Air Force back within one. However, VMI scored with two minutes remaining to seal the victory, as the Falcons were unable to get another goal.
The Falcons (2-3) outshot the Keydets, 33-23, for the game, but were stifled by VMI goalkeeper Evan Windisch, who came up with 14 saves. Air Force also forced a season-high 16 turnovers, while committing just 11 turnovers. However, the Keydets had the advantage at the face-off X, winning 9-of-14 face-offs in the game.
The Falcons return home this Saturday, March 8, when they open their ECAC slate with a 1:00 p.m. contest versus Bellarmine.
