DENVER, Colo. - Seniors Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Tommy McKee (Holt, Mich.) combined for 10 goals to lead the Air Force lacrosse team to a 17-9 victory over Marist Sunday in the Frontier Airlines Face-Off Classic, hosted by Denver.
Crampton finished with five goals and two assists against the Red Foxes, while McKee added five goals of his own, as the Falcons improved to 2-2 on the year.
Air Force opened the game with a score from McKee two minutes into the contest, followed by Crampton's first goal 30 seconds later. The Falcons' lead increased to 3-0 before Marist got on the board with a man-up goal at the 8:08 mark in the first quarter.
The remainder of the period featured an offensive flurry, with the two teams combining for eight goals in the final eight minutes of the quarter. After a goal by Crampton gave Air Force a 6-2 advantage with 2:35 on the clock, the Red Foxes responded with two quick scores to cut the margin to two goals. However, the Falcons received a pair of goals from Marcus Walker (Sr., Denver, Colo.) and Tom Burgess (Jr., Watertown, N.Y.) in the final minute of the quarter to take an 8-4 lead.
The scoring slowed down in the second quarter, with neither team getting on the board until the 2:25 mark, when Crampton tallied his third goal of the day. McKee added another score less than a minute later with a feed from Crampton to give the Falcons a 10-4 lead at the half.
Marist notched the first score of the third period to get back within five goals, but back-to-back tallies by McKee and Walker midway through the quarter helped Air Force extend its advantage. The Falcons outscored the Red Foxes 7-5 in the final two periods, as they posted their highest scoring output of the season.
Air Force won the ground ball battle against Marist, 37-27, and also held a 48-31 advantage on shots taken. Meanwhile, the Red Foxes were the winners at the face-off X, taking 18-of-30 draws, including all six in the fourth quarter.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Crampton and McKee were named to the Frontier Airlines Face-Off Classic all-tournament team, along with senior Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.), who finished with one goal and one assist on Sunday.
The Falcons return to action next Sunday, March 2, when they head to Lexington, Va., to take on VMI in a non-conference match-up.
