Air Force picked second in AHA preseason coaches' poll

    ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Air Force was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Hockey Association 2011-12 preseason coaches’ poll as released today at the AHA Media Day in Rochester, N.Y. Air Force, the 2010-11 AHA Tournament champions, received five of the 12 first-place votes and collected 112 points. RIT, the 2010-11 AHA regular-season champions, also received five first place-votes and tallied 113 points. Holy Cross was picked to finish third with the other two first-place votes and 103 points. The Crusaders were followed by Niagara (89 point), UConn (79), Robert Morris (70), Mercyhurst (59), Army (51), Canisius (42), Bentley (41), Sacred Heart (20) and AIC (13).

    RIT returns four of its top six scorers from last season as well as three defensemen and senior goaltender Shane Madolora, a second-team Inside College Hockey All-American. The Tigers were 19-11-8 overall and 15-5-7 in the AHA for 37 points.

    Air Force returns 18 of 26 letter-winners from last season’s team that went 20-12-6 overall and 14-7-6 in the AHA for 34 points. The Falcons beat RIT, 1-0, in the AHA championship game to win their fourth AHA tournament title in the last five years. The Falcons advanced to the NCAA East Regional, before falling to top-seeded Yale, 2-1 in overtime. AFA returns nine of the top 11 scorers, five of the six defenseman and sophomore goalie Jason Torf returns after starting 33 games last season.

    The Falcons open the season with an exhibition game against Simon Fraser on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Wenatchee, Wash. AFA returns home for an exhibition game vs. McGill University on Monday, Oct. 3, at 6:05 p.m. at Cadet Ice Arena. Air Force opens the regular-season at the Icebreaker Classic, Oct. 7-8, in Grand Forks, N.D. AFA faces North Dakota on Friday, Oct. 7, at 7:37 p.m. The Falcons then meet either Boston College or Michigan State on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 4:07 p.m. AFA opens the home schedule and AHA play on Friday, Oct. 14, at 7:05 p.m. MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
