U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force senior defenseman Adam McKenzie and junior forward Cole Gunner were named to the Atlantic Hockey Association all-conference second team as selected by the league's coaches.
McKenzie, from Petulama, Calif, ranked sixth in the AHA with 16 points (6-10-16) in conference games only. In all games, McKenzie was the team's top scoring defenseman with 17 points (7-10-17). His seven goals ranked seventh on the team among all players. McKenzie was strong down the stretch as helped Air Force secure a first-round bye in the AHA playoffs. He scored Air Force's first goal in the win at Canisius, Feb. 15, and then scored two points (1-1-2) in the 4-3 win over RIT on Feb. 21. In the regular-season finale, McKenzie posted a season-high three points (1-2-3) in a game Air Force needed to win to clinch the bye. He had the first assist on the game-winner and scored Air Force's third goal in the 4-1 win over Niagara. McKenzie was a first-team all-conference selection, and the league's defenseman of the year, as a junior and was named to the all-rookie team as a freshman.
Gunner was sixth in the AHA with 31 (10-21-31) points and fifth in assists (21) in conference games only. In all games, Gunner is the Falcons' leading scorer with 42 points (14-28-42) in 36 games. In all games, he is 19th in the nation in points. The Richfield, Minn., native scored a point in 18 of the last 22 games. At one point during the season, he had a 10-game point streak. He has 12 multiple-point games including a career-best four points (1-3-4) in the win over Mercyhurst, Feb. 7. He was named the AHA Player of the Week three times (Oct. 21, Jan. 21 and Feb. 10) and was the AHA Player of the Month in October. The all-conference honor is the first of Gunner's career.
Air Force (20-12-4 overall) is the No. 3 seed in the AHA Tournament and hosts sixth-seeded Niagara in an AHA Quarterfinal series, Friday-Saturday, March 14-15, and Sunday, March 16, if necessary, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena. All game times are 7:05 p.m. MT. game
