Air Force beats Lethbridge, 4-3, in overtime

USAFA, Colo . - Freshman Adam McKenzie scored the game-winning goal with 47.3 seconds left in overtime as Air Force beat the University of Lethbridge (Alberta, Canada), 4-3, in a college hockey exhibition game Monday night, Oct. 4, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
McKenzie took a pass from John Kruse just inside the top of the circle and ripped a wrister past Pronghorn goalie Reese St. Goddard for the game-winning goal. Air Force struck first in the game as Kruse scored from Paul Weisgarber and Casey Kleisinger. Kleisinger, a freshman from Edwards, Colo., won the faceoff and Weisgarber pushed the puck to the bottom of the circle where Kruse scored for a 1-0 lead at 8:07.
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead just 90 seconds into the second period. Air Force started the period on the power play on had several quality scoring chances. After the penalty expired, Eric Artman collected a pass in the corner and centered to Jacques Lamoureux. Lamoureux's shot from the slot was saved but Derrick Burnett put back the rebound at the 1:30 mark.
Lethbridge tied the game with two goals in a span of 29 seconds in the second period. After a Falcon turnover in the neutral zone in a four-on-four situation, Taylor Gal took a cross-ice pass from Dustin Moore in the left circle for the first Pronghorn goal of the game at 12:51. Lethbridge tied the game at 13:22 as the Falcons were trying to break out of their own zone. An errant pass ended up on the stick of Pronghorn defenseman Chris Cooper near the blue line. His wrister was rising toward the Falcon goal and was re-directed right in front by Moore. The Pronghorns took a 3-2 lead at the 4:40 mark of the third period when Lucio Pucci-Daniele scored on a wrister from the bottom of the left circle. Air Force answered to tie the game 40 seconds later. Freshman Jason Fabian took a short pass from Weisgarber in the slot and scored at the 15:20 mark.
The game remained tied until McKenzie's game-winner with 47.3 seconds left. Air Force out-shot Lethbridge, 41-25, in the game. All three goalies played for Air Force. Sophomore David Bosner started and played the first 30 minutes. He made nine saves and did not allow a goal. Junior Stephen Caple finished the second period and played the first five minutes of the third period. He made seven saves while allowing three goals. Freshman Jason Torf played the final 15 minutes of the third period and the overtime. He made six saves and did not allow a goal. Goddard played all 64 minutes for the Pronghorns and made 37 saves. AFA was 0-for-5 on the power play while Lethbridge was 0-for-2.
Air Force opens the regular season this weekend at the Kendall Classic in Anchorage, Alaska. Air Force faces 12th-ranked Alaska in the first game on Friday, Oct. 8, at 5:07 p.m. AT. The Falcons will then face the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7:07 p.m. AT.
