U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Shane Starrett recorded his sixth career shutout and A.J. Reid scored two goals as Air Force defeated AIC, 5-0, in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game Friday, Feb. 10, at the Academy’s Cadet Ice Arena. With the win, the Falcons moved into a tie for first place with Canisius in Atlantic Hockey. Air Force improved to 19-8-4 overall and 16-5-2 in the league. The Falcons also clinched a first-round bye, but have not yet secured home ice in the quarterfinals.
Reid put the Falcons on the board just 66 seconds into the game on the rush. Ben Kucera made a cross-ice pass to Reid on the right wing. Reid’s wrister beat Yellow Jacket goalie Zackarias Skog. Midway through the period, Evan Feno scored his sixth of the season at the 9:31 mark. Evan Giesler made a pass to Feno in the neutral zone and Feno made a spinning catch on the puck. Once he turned back around, he had a 2-on-1 and his wrister from the left circle gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Reid picked up his second goal of the game early in the second period. Dylan Abood took a shot from the right point that was saved, but Reid put back the rebound in a flurry out front for a 3-0 lead. Senior Tyler Rostenkowski then scored his third of the season at 12:37. Brady Tomlak knocked down a Bentley pass in the neutral zone and Jordan Himley carried the puck in the zone. Himley fed Rostenkowski on the right side for a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons added a short-handed goal in the third period as Himley broke up a play and Erik Baskin skated in and scored his ninth of the season.
Air Force outshot AIC, 34-17, in the game. Air Force was 0-for-2 on the power play while killing all five Yellow Jacket power plays. Starrett made 17 saves while Skog made 34 for AIC.
Air Force and AIC will conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 5:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
