U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Mercyhurst goalie Brandon Wildung made 33 saves to lead the Lakers to 1 -0 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game Friday, Jan. 5, at Cadet Ice Arena.
Mercyhurst (8-9-2 overall, 5-6-2 AHC) opened the scoring just 4:39 into the game on the rush. Taylor Best’s cross ice pass redirected off of an Air Force stick and right on the tape of Laker Joseph Duszak who scored with a wrister from the right circle.
Air Force (8-10-3, 3-8-2 AHC) outshot the Lakers, 24-8, over the final two periods, but was unable to score. The Falcons outshot the Lakers, 33-19, in the game. Billy Christopoulos made 18 saves for the Falcons. Air Force was 0-for-5 on the power play while Mercyhurst was 0-for-2.
“There were a lot of positives from this game,” head coach Frank Serratore said. “I thought we were the more aggressive team. We were pitching for most of the game and they were catching. They blocked a bunch of shots tonight and their goalie was good. Sometimes the puck just doesn’t bounce your way. This was a step in the right direction though.”
The same two teams will conclude the conference series on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 5:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena. The game will be broadcast in Colorado Springs on AM 740 KVOR.
