COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force men's and women's gymnastics teams spent Tuesday, Oct. 2, with students at Monroe Elementary School in Colorado Springs, as a part of the athletic department's adopt-a-school program. The afterschool program allows the grade-school children to interact with members of each of the Academy's sports teams throughout the year.
Following introductions, a handstand contest between the men's and women's teams and a brief tumbling demonstration by Air Force, the Falcons and K-5 students went through some of the pre-practice stretching that the gymnastics team does on a daily basis. The Falcons then divided the students onto two mats and spent the remainder of the time teaching basic tumbling moves, including somersaults, handstands and cartwheels. The students received hands-on attention from the gymnasts, who assisted and supported the young students through each new move.
At the conclusion of the afterschool program, the students were able to ask the gymnasts questions.
