USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Members of the Air Force men's gymnastics team came together this past weekend to help residents of the Mountain Shadows neighborhood in Colorado Springs with a massive cleanup following the Waldo Canyon Fire earlier this summer.
"It was a gratifying feeling to help the residents of Mountain Shadows, as they begin to rebuild their homes and community," head coach Kip Simons commented. "I'm very proud of my team, because they took the initiative to participate in such a meaningful service to the community."
The gymnasts were some of nearly 350 volunteers from the Academy and District-20 that descended on the Mountain Shadows community on Sunday (Aug. 26). During the nine-hour event, volunteers worked in an area that surrounded over 140 homes, chopping down burned trees, clearing dry brush and doing fire mitigation to prevent future burns.
"It was inspiring to see the team pull together for a cause outside of gymnastics," senior team captain James Okamoto said. "Not only did it help us bond as a team, but it also provided a chance to reach out to the community that has supported us, and continues to support us, so much."
