Air Force Men's Gymnastics Finishes 12th In Nation Academically
Aug. 3, 2001 The Air Force men's gymnastics team finished 12th in the nation in team grade point averages, combining for a team GPA of 2.900. The University of Vermont captured its first national academic team title in men's gymnastics with a team GPA of 3.398, followed by William and Mary (3.333), Massachusetts (3.234), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (3.213). The top 15 teams with their corresponding GPA's are: 1.) Vermont - 3.398 2.) William and Mary - 3.333 3.) Massachusetts - 3.234 4.) M.I.T. - 3.213 5.) Iowa - 3.148 6T.) Oklahoma - 3.111 6T.) Springfield - 3.111 8.) Ohio State - 3.040 9T.) Michigan - 2.939 9T.) Temple - 2.939 11.) Navy - 2.936 12.) Air Force - 2.900 13.) Illinois - 2.845 14.) Army - 2.793 15.) James Madison - 2.784
C1C's (Sr.) James Hayes and Scott Lewis were two of 45 gymnasts honored as 2001 All-America Scholar-Athletes by attaining at least a 3.50 GPA in addition to earning a minimum NCAA gymnastics score of 8.0 during the 2000-2001 academic year. Hayes maintained a GPA of 3.61 in electrical engineering and Lewis held a GPA of 3.74 in computer engineering.
