WOODLAND, Calif. - Highlighted by titles in five of eight events and a share of the Academy's vault record, Air Force senior Tory Brown was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced this evening (March 5). It is the first such award for the Falcons' team captain.
The senior improved his personal-best scores in every event and captured five total titles to lead the 11th-ranked Falcons to back-to-back victories over No. 16 Illinois-Chicago during the March 1-3 weekend in Chicago.
Brown opened the weekend with first-place finishes on the floor exercise (career-best 15.000), vault (14.900) and parallel bars (career-best 14.750) to lead the Falcons to a 421.850-405.550 win over the Flames on Friday, March 1. His score on the floor is tied for the fifth-best total in Academy history, while his score on the parallel bars is ranked sixth in the program record books.
He captured another pair of event titles and equaled the Academy record on the vault during Air Force's 420.050-411.750 victory over UIC on Sunday, March 3. Brown won the vault with an Academy-record matching mark of 15.050, while tallying a career-high 14.500 to take first on the high bar. He also tied for the team lead on the floor exercise, placing second with a 14.450.
Brown's award marks the second consecutive week that a member of the Air Force men's gymnastics team has captured the weekly MPSF award, as sophomore Gared Chapman was the league's top gymnast last week.
Air Force travels to Tucson, Ariz., on Friday (March 8), for a neutral site competition against No. 18 Arizona State and Washington.
