WOODLAND, Calif. - For the second straight week, Air Force junior James Okamoto was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Gymnast of the Week, the conference office announced today (Feb. 28). It is the second such award of Okamoto's career.
Okamoto broke the Academy record on the pommel horse on Sunday, Feb. 26, winning that event with a career-best 14.900 during a tri-meet with Temple and Brockport. In addition to easily winning that event and improving his overall score by 0.300, the junior also tied for third on the floor exercise (13.800) and fourth on the high bar (13.700). He also won the high bar on Friday, Feb. 24, as the Falcons defeated Army by nearly eight points. Okamoto scored a 14.000 - a mark just 0.100 off of his personal best - to win the high bar, while finishing second on the pommel horse with a score of 14.000.
Okamoto, who also claimed the MPSF weekly honor on Feb. 21, shared this week's award with Oklahoma's Jake Dalton.
The Falcons return to action this weekend with a pair of meets against Illinois-Chicago. Air Force will host the Flames on Friday, March 2, at 6 p.m., and again on Sunday, March 4, at 1 p.m.
