WOODLAND, Calif. - After breaking the Academy vault record for the second straight week, Air Force sophomore Gared Chapman was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday (Feb. 27). It is the first career honor for Chapman.
Backed by a career-best score of 15.050, the native of Americus, Ga., won the vault title during the Falcons' dual meet at third-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday, Feb. 23. The score marked the second straight week that Chapman has improved the program standard o the vault. In addition to his winning performance on the vault, Chapman placed third on the still rings with a score of 14.650.
Chapman's victory on the vault marked the first event title for an Air Force gymnast at Oklahoma since at least the 2006 season. He is currently tied for 11th on the vault in the national standings, with a three-score average of 14.933.
The Falcons, who moved to 11th in the GymInfo Rankings, return to action this weekend with a pair of dual meets at Illinois-Chicago. Air Force will face the 16th-ranked Flames on Friday, March 1, and again on Sunday, March 3.
