Feb. 23, 2011
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force senior gymnast Nash Mills continues to receive accolades following his strong performance at the All-Academy Championships. On Wednesday, Feb. 23, Mills was named the College Gymnastics Association National Gymnast of the Week (Collegiate Division). The award, which is decided by a vote of the country's coaches, is the first of the season for Mills and the third of his career.
Mills, who was named the Academy's Athlete of the Week on Monday and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week yesterday, shared the weekly CGA national honor with Cal's Donothan Bailey, who was the NCAA Division I winner.
The Coto de Caza, Calif., native claimed a share of two events titles and won the all-around outright to lead the Falcons to the title at the All-Academy Championships and the second-best team score in Academy history on Feb. 20.
Against his service academy counterparts from Army and Navy, Mills tied for first on both the still rings (career-best matching 14.800) and parallel bars (season-best 14.300). With a third-place score on the vault (15.600) and a fourth-place tie on the high bar (13.800), Mills collected a season-high combined score of 85.800 to win the all-around.
Mills also collected two top-three finishes at Minnesota on Feb. 18. The senior tied for second on the high bar with a score of 13.800, while tying for third on the still rings with a mark of 14.300.
The Falcons are idle until Friday, March 4, when they travel to Chicago for a pair of quad meets at Illinois-Chicago. Air Force opens the weekend against Stanford, Illinois and Illinois-Chicago on Friday, before facing UIC, Temple and Ohio State on Sunday (March 6).
