Oklahoma Dominates Rocky Mountain Open
The University of Oklahoma dominated the men's individual
competition in the Rocky Mountain Open finals held Saturday afternoon at
the Air Force Academy. Oklahoma had a Sooner placed first in each event, and
virtually sweeping the competition on the rings with a gymnast finishing
in seven of the top eight slots.
Senior Steve Van Etten of Riverside, Calif. took first place on the hi bar event with a score of 8.950. Van Etten finished within the top eleven in all six events, taking third on pommel horse eighth on vault and fourth on floor. Nebraska's Huskers followed OU with the number of gymnasts taking the top slots. Senior Jason Hardabura of Oakville, Ontario placed third in the hi bar event with a score of 8.550, 8.250 for fourth on the pommel horse, second on vault with a 9.00, and seventh in the floor exercise with a 7.700. Top Air Force Academy finishers in Saturday's events were C2C James Hayes with a 7.250 for the seventh-place slot in the high bar competition and a score of 8.200 in the parallel bars for fifth place; C1C Levi Torkelson with a 7.500 for eighth place in the floor exercise; C3C Justin Jones with a score of 8.550 for an outstanding third-place finish in the floor exercise; team captain C1C Andrew Fisher with a score of 8.250 for fourth place and C2C Scott Lewis with a score of 8.450 for third place on parallel bars. The Rocky Mountain Open continues Saturday evening with the Air Force women's gymnastics team hosting Brigham Young and the University of Denver. The women's competition begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Cadet Gymnasium's West Gym.
