Owen, Gaudlip Claim USAG National Titles
March 30, 2013
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - One day after helping the Air Force men's gymnastics team to its fourth straight USAG national team title, two Falcons collected individual titles during the final day of competition at the 2013 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships on Saturday, March 30, in Williamsburg, Va.
Junior Nick Owen and sophomore Nick Gaudlip captured their first USAG national titles, claiming first on the pommel horse and high bar, respectively. Owen matched his total from the event prelims, scoring a 14.400 to win the pommel horse, while Gaudlip scored a 15.000 to take the title on the high bar.
Gaudlip led Air Force to two of the top-three finishes on the high bar, as senior Mac Ritchie, who set the Academy record in that event last night, placed second with a score of 14.850. Air Force's pair separated themselves from the rest of the field by nearly an entire point (14.850-13.950). The Falcons also accounted for two of the top-three placements on the still rings, as sophomores Jon Spiro and Gared Chapman finished second (14.900) and third (14.600), respectively.
Senior Tory Brown finished second on the vault, after tallying a score of 14.650, while Chapman earned a top three finish on the floor exercise, as he tied for third with a score of 14.050.
Eight Falcons accounted for a combined nine USAG All-America accolades, based on their top-six finishes in the event finals this afternoon.
Chapman (floor exercise, still rings) paced the Falcons with a pair of certificates. Freshman Denis Aurelius joined Chapman as a USAG All-American on the floor exercise, while Spiro accompanied him on the medal podium for the still rings. Air Force also accounted for multiple USAG All-American honors on the high bar (Gaudlip, Ritchie), as well as individual accolades on the pommel horse (Owen), vault (Brown) and parallel bars (Greg Chaput).
The Falcons return to the Academy on Saturday, April 6, when it hosts the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. Action for the conference meet, which will be held at the Cadet West Gym, is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
