Falcons Sweep Event Titles at Southwest Cup

    TEMPE, Ariz. - Sweeping first-place finishes on every event, the Air Force men's gymnastics team wrapped up competition at the Southwest Cup on Saturday, March 1, in Tempe, Ariz. Senior Greg Stine won the all-around and five of six individual events, while sophomore Garrett Canter claimed the final event title.

    As a team, the Falcons posted its second-highest score of the season. Accumulating a score of 334.900, Air Force defeated host Arizona State (322.100) for the second time this season. During the meet, the Falcons set season-best scores on the parallel bars (56.350) and high bar (54.550).

    Under the new scoring system that went into effect this season, Stine set two Academy records during the meet, winning the floor exercise with a mark of 15.200 and the all-around with a total of 87.400. Stine also won the still rings (14.800), vault (15.350), parallel bars (14.700) and high bar (14.300).

    Canter claimed first-place honors on the pommel horse with a career-best mark of 13.350. In addition, Canter was one of four Falcons to tally personal-best scores on the parallel bars. With a score of 13.650, he joined seniors Brian Boardman (13.850) and Tyler Sickles (14.150), as well as freshman Aaron Zaiser (13.600) with record-setting performances on the parallel bars.

    Sickles also tallied a personal-best mark on high bar with a mark of 13.800, while freshman William Eastman upped his total on the event with a score of 13.600. Sophomore Brennan Wolford matched his career-best mark on the floor exercise with a score of 13.900.

    The Falcons return to the Academy this weekend for the first time since the season-opener. Air Force will host Illinois-Chicago on Friday, March 7 (7 p.m.) and again on Sunday, March 9 (2 p.m.) It will be the final two home competitions of the season for the Falcons, who will recognize their four seniors - Boardman, Kevin Murphy, Sickles and Stine.
