Air Force Takes Third at Rocky Mountain Open

Gared Chapman and Josh Pyne matched the Academy's vault record (14.750).

Competed at the U.S. National Qualifier in July...tied for fifth on the still rings (14.750)...finished within the top half of the field on the floor exercise (13.900) and vault (13.900)...also competed on the parallel bars (12.200) and high bar (13.450), en route to an overall 48th-place finish.

JUNIOR YEAR | 2014: USAG All-American on the still rings, after finishing third on that event (15.075) during the individual event finals of the USAG National Championships...advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships on the rings after finishing ninth (14.700) during the National Qualifier...finished 24th in the national meet with a score of 14.400...posted a career-best 15.650 on that event during the USAG team finals...that mark is ranked third on the Academy's all-time list...also broke the 15-point mark during the Rocky Mountain Open (15.050), against Illinois-Chicago (15.100) and during the USAG event finals (15.075)...competed on the vault during nine meets...posted a season-high 15.050 to win that event at Army...that mark was ranked second on the team in 2014.

SOPHOMORE YEAR | 2013: Received the program's Most Valuable Gymnast award...two-time USAG All-American...finished third on both the floor exercise (14.050) and still rings (14.600) at the USAG National Championships...set the Academy vault record of 15.450 during the Falcons' win over Washington...set or matched the Academy record on that event during four meets...first tied the program standard of 14.750 in the season-opening Rocky Mountain Open...improved record to 15.000 in winning effort at the All-Academy Championships...bettered it to 15.050 during first-place performance at Oklahoma the following week...the win at Oklahoma marked the Academy's first title in Norman (any event) since at least 2006...named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week following that meet...also took first on the vault during the team finals of the USAG Championships (14.750)...advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships on both the vault and still rings...placed sixth on the vault (14.950) and 10th on the rings (15.050) during the National Qualifier...scored a career-best 15.450 on the still rings against Temple...that score is ranked sixth on the Academy's all-time list...also finished first on that event at the All-Academy Championships (14.950) and in the Falcons' second meet at Illinois-Chicago (14.800)...posted the Falcons' best individual finish (third) at the MPSF Championships (14.900, still rings)...participated on the rings and vault at the Winter Cup Challenge...also competed on the floor exercise during the final nine team competitions, as well as the event finals of the USAG Championships...recorded the sixth-best floor score in program history (15.050) at home against Washington.

FRESHMAN YEAR | 2012: USAG All-American on the still rings...finished second at that meet with a score of 15.000...competed on the rings during every competition...recorded a career-high score of 15.100 during the team finals of the USAG National Championships...that mark is ranked 14th on the program's all-time list...competed on the vault during nine meets...scored a personal-best score of 14.400 at Nebraska...that mark is ranked fifth on the program's all-time list...participated on the floor exercise during four meets...scored a personal-best 13.800 twice...first claimed that mark during the dual meet with Illinois-Chicago and matched that score at Arizona State.

PERSONAL: Full name is Gared Ryan Chapman...nickname is "Meatball"...son of Eddie and Christine Chapman...has one younger half-sister, Ann, and one younger half-brother, Will...majoring in electrical engineering...future plans include becoming a pilot ...served as Element Leader during Basic Cadet Training...also held that position during the academic year and served as a PEER and Assistant Flight Commander...named to the Dean's List...enjoys writing and playing music...spent eight years playing in a school orchestra...comes from a family with a strong military history...has one uncle, Brook "Holly" Rollins, who is currently serving in the Air Force Reserves...completed the Powered Flight Program and served as cadre for Expeditionary Survival and Evasion Training (ESET) over the summer...gave up summer leave to train for the U.S. Qualifier...favorite events are the still rings, because "I feel in control and secure", and the high bar, because "it's a lot of fun to fly through the air"...member of Cadet Squadron 20.
