USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force sophomore gymnast Denis Aurelius was named the athletic department's Athlete of the Week on Monday, March 24, after claiming an individual title and helping the Falcons to the team title at the 2014 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships over the March 21-22 weekend.
Aurelius became the first Falcon to hit the 15-point mark on the floor this season, as he scored a 15.000 during the team finals on March 21. Adding a fourth-place score of 14.700 on the still rings and a 14.150 on the vault, the sophomore helped Air Force to its fifth-straight USAG national team title.
The native of Plain City, Ohio, improved his overall score on the floor exercise to 15.225 - the third-highest total in Academy history - en route to his first USAG individual title. One of four Falcons to claim USAG national titles (Nick Owen, pommel horse; Josh Ramos, parallel bars; Nick Gaudlip, high bar), Aurelius became the program's first national champion on the floor exercise since 2007. He added a second USAG All-America citation after claiming sixth on the still rings with a 14.550.
Aurelius, who shared the department's weekly award with NCAA All-American fencer Alyssa Hofilena, returns to action this Saturday (March 29), when the Air Force men's gymnastics team travels to Norman, Okla., for the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
