The Air Force golf team returns to action this weekend at the 12th-annual Service Academy Classic at the Trophy Club Golf Course in Dallas, Texas. The Falcons face off against teams from Army, Navy and the Merchant Marines in the tournament.
Last Time Out...
Air Force opened its season at the Falcon Invitational Sept. 10-11, held at the Eisenhower Golf Course. The Falcons finished in a tie for eighth (887), as sophomore Ben Jackman led the way in a tie for 17th with a seven-over par 220. Meanwhile, junior Scott Redmond finished in a tie for 26th (+10, 223), senior Daryl McCoy was tied for 32nd (+11, 224), senior Kala'e Leong came in tied for 35th (+12, 225) and sophomore Tyler Goulding shot a 226 (+13) to tie for 41st. In addition, junior Christian Jackson tied for 35th with an 11-over par 224, as he led the JV team at the tournament.
The Service Academy Golf Classic...
The Service Academy Golf Classic is the only NCAA sanctioned golf match featuring head to head competition between the four service academies.
The tournament was started in 1993 by Bill Reemtsma, a 1962 Air Force Academy gradaute. Reemtsma passed away after the second tournament was played in 1994, but supporters of the tournament have helped continue the event in his honor.
In addition to the NCAA match, cadets and midshipmen will pair up with alumni and friends to help raise money for the athletic departments of each academy.
The Reemtsma Trophy...
The Air Force Academy has earned the Reemtsma Trophy, given to the winner of the annual Classic, in each of the last nine years. Last season, Air Force posted a 20-stroke victory over its closest competitor, the U.S. Naval Academy. Last year's individual champion was Navy's Billy Hurley, the first time in seven years that a non-Air Force cadet had taken medallist honors.
