The Air Force golf team begins its second tournament of the season on Monday, Sept. 23 in Erie, Colo., at the fourth annual Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, held at the par-72, 7,741-yard Colorado National Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament is slated to begin with two rounds on Monday with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start, while the final round will begin Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 8 a.m.
Fifteen teams are slated to compete in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. They are: Air Force, Campbell, Colorado, Denver, Gonzaga, Houston Baptist, Missouri-Kansas City, Nebraska, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Oregon State, Texas State, Utah, Washington State and Wyoming. Heading to the tournament for Air Force is Kyle Westmoreland, Matthew Dunn, Jack Howard, Philip Colwell and Todd Berglund. Miguel Macias and Blake Edwards will play as individuals.
LAST TIME OUT
The Falcons dominated their own Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational earlier this month, winning the tournament for the fourth time by 12 strokes over second-place UTEP on the Blue Course at the Academy's Eisenhower Golf Club. The Falcons, who won the inaugural tournament in 1969, tied for the title in 2001 and won it again outright in 2005, finished the tournament at 15 under par with a three-round total of 849. Senior Kyle Westmoreland won the individual title with a three-round total of 204 (-12), one stroke shy of the tournament record, set by Ryan Spears of Wichita State in 2007. Sophomore Matthew Dunn finished in a tie for second at 209 (-7) with Frederik Dreier of UTEP.
FALCONS RANKED IN TOP 10
Based on their season-opening win at the Falcon Invitational, the Falcons are currently ranked No. 7 in the country in the most recent national rankings by GolfStat. Other ranked teams in the field include Colorado (#35), Denver (#40), Nevada (#49), Oregon St. (#51) and Washington St. (#91).
HEAD COACH George Koury
This fall, Air Force head coach George Koury is in his 12th season at the helm of the Falcons' golf program. After serving three seasons as an assistant under legendary coach Gene Miranda, Koury took over the program at the start of the 2002-03 season.
The Falcons will travel to Macon Ga., for the Brickyard Collegiate Championship hosted by the Mercer University. The three-day tournament begins on Friday, Oct. 4.
