TULSA, Okla. - After struggling in the second round of competition, Air Force senior golfer Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) finished tied for 105th at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship, being held at the par-70, 7,093-yard Southern Hills Country Club. Whitney fired a 9-over-par 79 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 150 (+10).
While Whitney opened the tournament on a strong note, carding a 71 (+1) in the first round, he managed just one birdie on day two of action. His final score came two strokes over the cut mark, as the low 64 scorers in the 312-golfer field advance to match play beginning tomorrow.
Whitney's appearance in the U.S. Amateur marked his second career USGA championship event. Earlier this summer, he advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Norman, Okla.
Whitney and the rest of his teammates open up the 2009 fall season Sept. 11-12 at the annual William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
