BOULDER, Colo. - With a two-round score of 142 (+2), Air Force golfer Tom Whitney (Sr., La Quinta, Calif.) finished third at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying, being held at the par-70 Boulder Country Club on Monday. As one of the top three finishers, Whitney earns a spot at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship, slated for Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla.
Whitney fired a 1-over-par 71 in each of Monday's rounds to finish one stroke ahead of Kyle Huus for the third qualifying slot. Also advancing to the U.S. Amateur from the Boulder Sectional Qualifying were CU golfer Justin Bardgett and Tristan Bierenbroodspot of Arizona State.
The U.S. Amateur will mark the second USGA championship appearance for Whitney, who advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links earlier this summer.
Whitney and the rest of his Air Force teammates will start out the 2009-10 season Sept. 11-12 at the annual William H. Tucker Invitational, hosted by New Mexico.
