Air Force golfer Kyle Westmoreland shot a two-over par 73 in the first round of the 2012 HealthOne Colorado Open Thursday at Green Valley Ranch Golf Course in Denver, Colo. Westmoreland is tied for 75th after the first round, while 2010 Air Force graduate Tom Whitney is leading the tournament after firing a seven-under par 64 on Thursday.

Westmoreland is writing a daily journal from the tournament for goairforcefalcons.com. Today's entry includes his experience on Wednesday during a charity event:

From the time I arrived at Green Valley Ranch Golf Course on Monday, I could tell this is much more than just another golf tournament. Playing with kids from the First Tee of Denver on Wednesday was a real honor. With each shot I learned more about the charity and its influence in society (and there were a lot of them). My partner, 10-year old Chandler, has grown up in inner city Denver. He dreams to be a member of the Lakers one day but more importantly is considering the Air Force Academy for his college experience! Helping him learn the game was a great honor.

Today was also fantastic. I learned a lot about my ability to handle my nerves today. Playing in my first ever pro tournament I definitely had some pre-round jitters. Competing today was fun and I look forward to posting a number tomorrow. After putting myself into a little bit of a hole today, I have some work to do these next three days to achieve my goals.

    Go Falcons!!
