July 14, 2009
NORMAN, Okla. - Firing a 2-over-par 73 on Tuesday, Air Force golfer Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) finished tied for 23rd in stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, being held at the par-71, 7,289-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Canadian Nick Taylor, the low amateur at the 2009 U.S. Open, took stroke-play medalist honors with a 6-under-par 136. Whitney carded three birdies on Tuesday, including a pair on par-5 holes, to finish stroke play at 146 (+4), following an opening round score of 73 on Monday. As one of the low 64 scorers in the 155-player field, Whitney advances to the first round of match play, which is slated to begin tomorrow. The second and third rounds of match play will take place on Thursday, July 16. Quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for July 17, while the 36-hole final round will be played Saturday, July 18. The winner of the tournament receives, among numerous qualifying exemptions, a likely invitation to compete in the next Masters Tournament. Whitney opens match play tomorrow morning at 8:45 against Zack Blair from Ogden, Utah. Blair tied for 32nd during stroke play, finishing at 5-over-par.
