NORMAN, Okla. - Following one round of play, Air Force golfer Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) sits in a tie for 37th place at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, being held at the par-71, 7,289-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. The U.S. Publinks is the first USGA championship appearance for Whitney, who competed in a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying earlier this summer.

On the opening day of stroke play, Whitney fired a 2-over-par 73 to land in a tie for 37th place in the 155-player field. Following the second round, which is set to commence tomorrow morning, the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers, who will advance to match play.

The first round of match play is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, followed by the second and third rounds on July 16. Quarterfinals and semifinals will take place July 17, while the 36-hole final round will be played Saturday, July 18. The winner of the tournament receives, among numerous qualifying exemptions, a likely invitation to compete in the next Masters Tournament.

Whitney will start the second round tomorrow afternoon, scheduled for a 1:03 p.m. (CT) tee time from the 10th hole.
