Air Force's Kyle Westmoreland finished in a tie for 36th place at the 2013 NCAA Southwest Regional Golf Tournament at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Westmoreland fired a one-over par 71 in the final round on Saturday for a three-round total of three-over par 213.
"(Assistant coach) Chris Wilson and I are very proud of how Kyle represented himself, his teammates and the Air Force Academy this week," said Air Force head coach George Koury. "He competed well with some of the nation's best players."
The junior from Katy, Texas, had three birdies and four bogeys on Saturday and posted Air Force's best individual finish at a regional tournament since Tom Whitney placed 27th in 2009.
UCLA, Georgia, UCF, Texas A&M and host Arizona State will advance to the NCAA Tournament, while
Greg Eason of Central Florida took individual medalist honors with a 12-under par total of 198. Westmoreland finished nine shots behind Dustin Korte of Austin Peay State, who was the individual not on one of the top five teams that also advanced.
Westmoreland will compete in a sectional qualifier at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas, Texas on Monday, June 3 for a chance to earn a spot in the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
