Air Force Travels to Arizona for MWC Men's Golf Championship

    The Air Force golf team concludes the 2009 season this week, April 30-May 2, when it travels to Tucson, Ariz., for the 10th-annual Mountain West Conference Championship. The 54-hole tournament is being played at the par-71, 7,136-yard, OMNI Tucson National Golf Club, with a single 18-hole round played each day. Each group will start off on hole 1 with tee times beginning daily at 7:00 a.m. (PT). Live hole-by-hole scoring for the tournament will be available at

    The Pairings...
    Air Force will start out Thursday in group 3, along with Wyoming and Utah. TCU, San Diego State and UNLV will make up group 1, while BYU, New Mexico and Colorado State will tee off in the second group.

    For round two and three, team groups shall be by result and all teams will begin on the first tee.

    The Field...
    Three of the teams in the Mountain West Conference are ranked in the top 25 of the latest Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches poll (No. 15 TCU, No. 24 Colorado State and No. 25 UNLV). The complete field follows, with the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings in parentheses: Air Force (162), BYU (65), Colorado State (26), New Mexico (37), San Diego State (23), TCU (20), UNLV (22), Utah (188) and Wyoming (197).

    Last Year At the MWC Championship...
    Colorado State posted a four-stroke win over second-place TCU to win its first MWC title at the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championship. Meanwhile, UNLV's Eddie Olson claimed medalist honors with a 4-under-par 209.

    Air Force came in ninth in the team standings, with sophomore Tom Whitney leading the Falcon individuals, placing tied for 14th at 216 (+3).

    Last Time Out...
    Led by junior Tom Whitney, the Falcons brought home an 11th-place finish at the PING Cougar Classic, hosted by BYU, April 24-25.

    Whitney finished the tournament tied for 23rd place with a 2-over-par 218 to pace Air Force for the 11th time this season. Meanwhile, senior captain Shaun O'Bryant finished just one stroke behind to tie for 25th place in the individual standings.



    In the Conference Rankings...
    Junior Tom Whitney is currently sixth in the Mountain West Conference rankings for lowest stroke average this season. Whitney has a stroke average of 71.61.

    Meanwhile, Air Force rates fourth in the MWC with a team stroke average of 297.24.
