The Air Force golf team begins play at the PING Cougar Classic on Friday, April 26 in Provo, Utah. The two-day tournament, hosted by BYU, takes place at the par-72, 7,142-yard Riverside Country Club. The first two rounds will be played Friday, while the final round is scheduled for Sat., April 27.
In addition to Air Force and host BYU, seven other teams are slated to compete in this week's tournament. They are: Boise State, Colorado State, St. Mary's, Southern Utah, Utah State, Weber State and Wyoming. The Falcons will send Andrew Hoops, Jack Howard, Kyle Westmoreland, Philip Colwell and Blake Edwards as the team of five players.
AIR FORCE HEAD COACH George Koury
Air Force head coach George Koury is in his 11th season at the helm of the Falcons' golf program. After serving three seasons as an assistant under legendary coach Gene Miranda, Koury took over the program at the start of the 2002-03 season.
Koury, a 1993 Academy graduate and former team captain and MVP, has helped the Falcons continue their dominance at the Service Academy Golf Classic, winning 14 straight titles at the event. In addition, he helped lead Air Force to the team title at the 2005 Falcon Invitational, marking the first time since the inaugural event in 1969 that the team won its own tournament outright.
LAST TIME OUT
Air Force shot an 11-over par 291 in the final round to finish in 17th place at the 2013 Cowboy Classic, hosted by the University of Wyoming, in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Falcons finished with a two-round total of 602 on the par-70, 7,133-yard Talking Stick North Golf Course.
Junior Jack Howard led the Falcons, firing a 71 in the final round for a two-round total of seven-over par 147. He finished in a tie for 25th overall, five spots ahead of senior Andrew Hoops, who shot a 73 on Tuesday for a two-round total of 149.
LAST YEAR AT THE COWBOY CLASSIC
The Falcons shot a six-over par 294 in the final round to finish in a tie for sixth place with Boise State at the Cougar Classic, hosted by Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. The Falcons finished with a 15-over par total of 879 on the par-72, 7,142-yard Riverside Golf Club.
Sophomore Kyle Westmoreland led the Falcons on Saturday, firing a one-under par 71 the final round for a three-round total of one-under par 215. Westmoreland secured his fifth career top-10 finish by tying for 10th place with Blake Biddle of UNLV. Senior Robert Belz finished in a tie for 21st with a total of 221, followed by junior Andrew Hoops, who finished in a tie for 28th with a total of 223 and sophomore Philip Colwell, whose total of 224 placed him in a tie for 33rd. Senior Caleb Leestma rounded out the squad with a 226 and 41st place.
Air Force travels to Tucson, Ariz., for the 2013 Mountain West Championships beginning on Friday, May 3.
