Falcons Travel to Scottsdale for Cowboy Classic

Cowboy ClassicApril 9-10, 2012Talking Stick Golf ClubScottsdale, Ariz. THIS WEEKThe Air Force golf team begins play at the 10th annual Cowboy Classic on Monday, April 9 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The two-day tournament, hosted by the University of Wyoming, takes place at the par-70, 7,133-yard North Course at the Talking Stick Golf Club. The first two rounds will be played Monday, while the final round is scheduled for Tuesday, April 10. Each day of action will begin with a 7:30 a.m. (PT) shotgun start. THE FIELDTwenty-four teams are slated to compete in this week’s tournament. They are: Air Force, Wyoming, Colorado State, Arizona State, Texas Tech, Boise State, Nevada, Wichita State, Colorado, UC Davis, Kansas State, Northern Colorado, New Mexico State, Santa Clara, Old Dominion, Cal State Northridge, Gonzaga, San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Weber State, Utah State, Kansas and Arizona. Making the trip for Air Force will be Robert Belz, Andrew Hoops, Kyle Westmoreland, Blake Edwards and Caleb Leestma. Phillip Colwell will participate as an individual. AIR FORCE HEAD COACH George KouryAir Force head coach George Koury is in his 10th season at the helm of the Falcons’ golf program. After serving three seasons as an assistant under legendary coach Gene Miranda, Koury took over the program at the start of the 2002-03 season.Koury, a 1993 Academy graduate and former team captain and MVP, has helped the Falcons continue their dominance at the Service Academy Golf Classic, winning 15 straight titles at the event. In addition, he led Air Force to the team title at the 2005 Falcon Invitational, marking the first time since the inaugural event in 1969 that the team won its own tournament outright. LAST TIME OUTThe Falcons finished in seventh place at the 2012 Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz., March 22-24. The Falcons shot a final-round 290 to finish with a three-round total of five-under par 859 on the par-72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course.Junior Andrew Hoops was Air Force’s top individual, finishing in a tie for 12th place with a four-under par total of 212. He tied his season-best with a three-under par 69 in the final round on Saturday. Senior Robert Belz, who fired a career-best 68 in the first round, and sophomore Kyle Westmoreland finished in a tie for 21st at one-under par 215, followed by freshman Blake Edwards (T48th, 220) and senior Caleb Leestma (T57th, 221). Sophomores Jack Howard (T72nd, 224) and Todd Berglund (88th, 232) participated as individuals. UP NEXTAir Force takes a couple of weeks off before heading to Provo, Utah, for the PING Cougar Classic, beginning April 27.
