Air Force Golfers Head to Border Olympics

    The Air Force golf team is back in action this weekend, March 5-6, at the Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston. The 54-hole tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,125 yard Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas. The first two rounds will take place on Friday, with the final round of 18 holes played on Saturday.

    Last Time Out...
    The Air Force golf team, led by senior Tom Whitney, placed sixth at the WSU Snowman Getaway Feb. 22-23. The Falcons fired a three-round score of 904, while Whitney matched his best finish of the season, tying for second place at 213 (-3).

    The Field...
    The field for this week's tournament features 16 teams, including Arkansas, which is ranked 25th in the latest Golf World/NIKE Golf Division I Coaches' Poll. The complete field, with Golfweek/Sagarin rankings in parentheses, follows: Air Force (155), Arkansas (44), Auburn (52), Baylor (36), Houston (116), Lamar (70), New Mexico State (100), North Texas (80), Notre Dame (71), Oklahoma (94), Rice (33), Texas State (111), UT-Arlington (59), UTEP (191), UTSA (190) and Washington State (65).

    In the Rankings...
    According to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings (updated Feb. 27), senior Tom Whitney is ranked at 103 among collegiate golfers. Meanwhile, his season stroke average of 71.19 is the third-best in the Mountain West Conference.

    Another Top-Three Showing...
    With four top-three finishes this season, including the latest at the WSU Snowman Getaway, senior Tom Whitney has now posted a top-three finish nine times in his career, tying the Academy record for most individual tournament finishes in the top three. Ben Leestma, a 2002 graduate, also recorded nine top-three finishes in his career, including seven individual titles.

    The Falcons are back in action March 15-16, when they travel to California for the Triumph at Pauma Valley.
