Golf Team Finishes 9th at Emerald Coast Invitational
Ben Leestma continued his outstanding season, leading the Air Force golf
team to a solid ninth-place finish at the Emerald Coast Invitational.
Leestma notched his fourth top-five finish of the 2000-01 season, finishing
the tournament tied for third place with a three-round total of 222
(72-73-77). Leestma, who was in first place heading into the final round,
led the Falcons to a three-round total of 958 (316-325-317) in their first
competition of the spring season. He now has two first-place and two
third-place finishes in seven events.
Host university West Florida (897) won the two-day tournament, followed by runner up North Carolina Wilmington (907). Sixteen schools participated in the tournament, which took place at the Sportsman of Perdido Golf Resort in Pensacola, Fla. Wilmington's Derek Brown won the individual title, shooting three-over par (291) for the tournament. After two weeks off, the team will travel to Ocala, Fla., to play in the Ball State Invitational on March 10-11.
