Falcons Conclude Day One at Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational

ERIE, Colo. - Despite struggling in the opening round, the Air Force golf team currently sits in 10th place at the inaugural Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado. The Falcons posted a two-round score of 599 on the par-72, 7,741-yard course at the Colorado National Golf Club. Leading Air Force’s team after two rounds is freshman Kyle Westmoreland (Katy, Texas), who is currently tied for 23rd place at 147 (+3). Meanwhile, fellow newcomer Philip Colwell (The Woodlands, Texas) sits just one stroke behind in a tie for 29th place. Also in the top 50 for Air Force after one day of action is junior Caleb Leestma (Seabrook, Texas), who fired a 72 in round two and is now tied for 50th place at 152. Rounding out the team are Andrew Hoops (So., Highland, Calif.) and Kyle Bailey (Sr., Austin, Texas) at 153 and 155, respectively. In addition, two Air Force golfers are competing as individuals in this week’s tournament. The top overall performer for the Falcons at the end of the second round is sophomore Wes Denny (Cincinnati, Ohio). Denny, who carded a 71 in round two, is tied for 14th individually with a 2-over-par 146. Also competing is junior Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas), who is tied for 29th with a score of 148. Leading the way in the team standings after the first day of action is New Mexico, which sits at an even-par 576. Meanwhile, San Jose State’s Mark Hubbard sits atop the individual leaderboard with a 5-under-par 139. The final round of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational begins tomorrow morning with an 8:00 shotgun start.
