Air Force in Seventh Place at Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational

    Paced by sophomore Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas), the Air Force golf team sits in seventh place at its own Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, being held at the par-72, 7,321-yard Eisenhower Golf Club-Blue Course. After two rounds of action, the Falcons have put together a team score of 574 (-2).

    Belz carded a 70 in each of his first two rounds and currently sits tied for seventh place at 140 (-4). Senior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) is also below par after two rounds, tied for 17th place at 143 (-1), while Travis Deckert (So., Wichita, Kan.), tied for 23rd place in the individual standings, is at an even-par 144 going into the final round.

    Also competing for the Air Force varsity team are freshman Andrew Hoops (Highland, Calif.), tied for 42nd place at 147, and Kyle Bailey (Jr., Austin, Texas), tied for 85th at 153.

    Meanwhile, the Air Force Silver team sits in 14th place in the 19-team field, posting a score of 593 after two rounds. Leading the way for the Silver team on Saturday, tied for 51st at 148, were Wes Denny (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Peter Guzowski (Sr., Tiffin, Ohio), who shot a team-low 69 in the second round. Also competing for the Silver team are Caleb Leestma (So., Seabrook, Texas) at 149, Mark Boyer (So., Hershey, Pa.) at 151 and Aaron White (Jr., Hereford, Texas) at 157, while two others, Alex Horrell (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Tyler Downing (Fr., Sturgis, Mich.) are competing unattached.


     

     

    Leading the way in the team standings after the first day of action is Utah, which sits at 564 (-12). The Utes are led by Mike Branca, who is tied with Northern Colorado’s Steve Bidne for first place on the individual leaderboard at 137 (-7). In addition, Colorado’s Kevin Kring tied a course record with his score of 64 in the opening round.

    The final round of the Falcon Invitational begins tomorrow morning with an 8:15 shotgun start.
