Falcons Wrap Up Opening Day at MWC Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. - After one round, the Air Force golf team sits in seventh place at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championship, being held at the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National. The Falcons posted a team score of 291 (+7) on the opening day of competition, sitting just two strokes behind sixth-place UNLV. Leading the way for Air Force on day one was junior Robert Belz (San Antonio, Texas), who is currently tied for fifth place after firing a 2-under 69 in the opening round. Freshman Philip Colwell (The Woodlands, Texas) is next in the standings for the Falcons, tied for 18th with a single-round score of 72 (+1), while senior Kyle Bailey (Austin, Texas) sits a stroke behind in a tie for 22nd place. Meanwhile, Kyle Westmoreland (Fr., Katy, Texas) and Caleb Leestma (Jr., Seabrook, Texas) complete the Air Force lineup. Westmoreland carded a 75 in the opening round and is currently tied for 34th place, while Leestma is 45th with a first-round score of 82. Eighth-ranked San Diego State leads in the team standings after one round, firing a 6-under-par 278, while Wyoming’s Gabe Maier sits atop the individual leaderboard after shooting a 6-under-par 65 on Thursday. The second round of the Mountain West Conference Championship will begin tomorrow morning at 7:00 (PT), while the final round will be played on Saturday.
